Award Description: Conowingo is designated a Medically Underserved Area (MUA) with an IMU score of 58.3. Conowingo, MD is a 100% rural area, and the surrounding areas Rising Sun, and Port Deposit are 67% rural. The average travel time to the nearest hospital is 35 minutes and there is no form of public transportation. With an understanding of these concerns, West Cecil Health Center will meet the needs of the uninsured and underinsured by expanding the hours of service of the operations and employing the necessary staff to fulfill these needs. Our mission, like so many others is to increase access to comprehensive primary and preventive health care and to improve the health care status of underserved, underinsured, and non-insured members of the community. After successful tracking of patient volumes over the past year, we have concluded that that there is a need for our facility of care after hours. Our plans are to hire a part time Nurse Practitioner at 20 hours a week along with the necessary supporting staff of a medical and administrative assistants to expand our hours of care on Monday Nights from 4pm to 8pm. We will maximize this staff to provide additional coverage on Wednesday Nights and Saturday Hours. The goal is to increase our patient base and be able to make these positions full time over the two-year period of this grant. West Cecil Health Center is in Cecil County and on the boarder of Harford County and Pennsylvania. Press release will be published in all local areas to announce our new expansions of hours and providers. Brochures and flyers will be distributed in the local stores to make the community aware of our ability and desire to serve its underserved, underinsured and non-insured members.
Project Description: There is a great need in our community, to add another medical provider, but due to the shortage of providers West Cecil Health Center has been struggling to fill this provider position. Our initial plan was to hire a part time Nurse Practitioner, but we have received very little response from job postings. The next strategy was to open this position up to Medical Providers, but either via negotiations or credentialing process we were not able to secure a provider. We have tried several tactics, such as Sunday Papers, Career Builder, Resume Search Engines and letters to local schools. We have recently registered with the National Health Service Corps and have posted the open job positions to assist us in attracting a provider. In not being able to secure a provider has caused a delay in hiring the additional support staff that was outlined in the grant application. Due to the amount of growth West Cecil Health Center continues to see and with the recent installation of Electronic Health Records we have started to fulfill these jobs functions. Our initial plan was to hire a full time administrative position, but instead have added additional two part time administrative staff giving us more flexibility in coverage. In September a full time Medical Assistant was added to assist the providers. West Cecil Health Center is also working with the local hospital to assist us with filling the Medical Provider or Nurse Practitioner job position. West Cecil Health Center being in a rural area is creating a challenge in attracting providers due to the commute. West Cecil Health Center is committed to finding a provider to help us meet the demands of our community and will continue to explore all options until this position is secured.
Jobs Summary: Initail plan was to hire a full time Administrative Postion but we have since decided to hire two part time postions equaling 1 FTE to offer more flexibility in providing coverage during operational hours. Recently a full time medical assistant was hired. (Total jobs reported: 1)
