Award Description: Provide research and research support to produce data that will assist in bio-based fuel development, ensure the occupational health of personnel and permit faster fuel certification. Work will be planned and accomplished in close collaboration with government scientists. Bio fuel technologies that help protect the health of warfighters from toxic insult during military operations will also be applicable to civilian populations and industries.
Project Description: The US Air Force is pursuing the development of alternative fuels to decrease dependence on foreign oil sources. Alternative fuels need to be examined for potential hazards to Air Force personnel. RHPB conducted a Toxicology Program for a Fischer Tropsch (FT) fuel (S-8) that will be the baseline for comparing all future bio-based alternative fuels. There are a number of FT and bio-based jet fuels that need to be examined as they undergo further development. A toxicology research program for bio-based fuels was developed with the following studies planned: 1) mutagenicity testing; 2) dermal irritation test and 3) inhalation testing. The following are the expected results: 1) One Final Report for the Evaluation of Five Jet Fuels for Potential Mutagenicity; 2) One Final Report for the Acute Dermal Irritation Study of Alternative Fuels; and 3) One Final Report for Inhalation Tests to Screen New Alternative Jet Fuels
