Award Description: A one-year training period is proposed at the House Ear Institute (HEI) for Dr. Wilkinson in the laboratory of Qian-Jie Fu, Ph.D. The supplement would attach Dr. Wilkinson’s training to Dr. Fu’s R01 grant on audio processing for cochlear implants (NIDCD R01 DC 004993-07). This R01 grant extends to April, 2012. A portion of supplement involves direct research training and developing experiments to improve transmission of acoustic patterns to cochlear implant (CI) users via noise cancellation preprocessing. These experiments investigate the effects of different preprocessing strategies on CI users’ speech understanding in the presence of background noise, competing speech, and reverberation. Additional time will be spent training in the areas of responsible conduct in research, statistics and research design, and grantsmanship.

Project Description: This application is to help Dr. Wilkinson evolve into an independent researcher in a one-year training period. Both experimental patient research and training in the responsible conduct of research, statistics and research design, and grant writing will occur during this one-year period. Phase 1 (first quarter) is to evaluate the benefit of existing signal processing algorithms in cochlear implant users. After the Phase 1 training, Dr. Wilkinson has been well familiarized with the behavioral testing procedures proposed in the experiment and the general cochlear implant speech processing strategies. During the first three-month training period, Dr. Wilkinson has collected the data from six cochlear implant patients and submitted an abstract for 33rd ARO Mid-winter Meeting based on the results from the experiment.

Jobs Summary: This application requests funds from the Supplement class: Fostering the Entry of Clinically-Trained Individuals into the Research Pipeline, Title Code: PIPE for Eric P. Wilkinson, M.D. The supplement requires a one-year training period at the House Ear Institute (HEI) for Dr. Wilkinson in the laboratory of Qian-Jie Fu, Ph.D. The supplement would attach Dr. Wilkinson’s training to Dr. Fu’s R01 grant on audio processing for cochlear implants (NIDCD R01 DC 004993). A portion of supplement involves direct research training and developing experiments to improve transmission of acoustic patterns to cochlear implant users. Additional time will be spent training in the areas of responsible conduct in research, statistics and research design, and grantsmanship. 50% of Dr. Wilkinson’s time will be spent on experimental research and research training, and 50% will be spent in the clinical practice of otology and neurotology. This supplement is expected to help Dr. Wilkinson evolve into an independent researcher, which will help Dr. Wilkinson to secure the research funding from either NIH or private sectors. Therefore, besides supporting Dr. Wilkinson’s position (50%), this supplement will also stimulate the economy by enabling the hiring of additional staff in the future research funding.
