Award Description: This Request is the Vermont portion of a regional effort from the northeast IDeA states (VT, NH, ME, RI and DE) to provide the first fiber-optic backbone through northern New England that connects higher-education and biomedical research institutions for research and workforce development. Three of these states (VT, NH and ME) are in the country’s Black Hole of Connectivity. Our aim is to Turn On The Light. Our states are successfully building biomedical research infrastructure through both INBRE and COBRE programs. Most importantly, we have combined resources and expertise to pursue large-scale regional genomics and metagenomics studies as well as regional workforce development programs. These projects hinge upon cyberinfrastructure but are limited by poor regional connectivity and impacts our biomedical research. The North East Cyber-infrastructure Consortium (NECC) seeks to establish a redundant fiber network that connects the NECC states and allows us to reach to the University of Rhode Island and Delaware State. The network will allow us to reach the data centers that we will establish in Orono, ME and Newark, DE, for the support of collaborative, regional biomedical research projects. A regional workforce development project centered on genomic annotation will reach out to minority-serving high schools and institutions to broaden biomedical workforce diversity. Finally, the New England Regional Translational Research Network, an association of health centers and biomedical research facilities that facilitates clinical and translational research, requires an integrated, high-throughput capable network for near synchronous transfer of data.
