Award Description: This grant was funded under category 3 of the Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs Program, administered by BJA. Lea County will use the award to preserve two full-time Lea County Detention Center (LCDC) positions that had recently been cut from the budget. Funds will also improve and enhance the sharing of criminal justice information across rural law enforcement agencies. LCDC will purchase and install a new software system that will enable easy access and quick response time to requests from other agencies. The grant will enhance LCDC's administation and operations by improving internal administration and operations such as booking and release processing and inmate tracking, facilitating federal and state corrections reporting, and providing computerrized inmate and facility accounting.
Project Description: No activities took place during the quarter being reported.
Jobs Summary: Detention Center Officers. Preserving two full-time detention positions will allow for two current employees to serve more effectively as a Program Officer and a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Coordinator. It will enable LCDC to establish an improved system of screening, assessment, and treatment services needed to adress the substance abuse recovery of incarcerated individuals. GED programs can be expanded through collaboration with a local community college. Improved coordination with faith-based and other organizations will allow for the expansion of a variety of programming including 12-step and other recovery programs, parenting classes, and other specialized programs that will assist the inmates in recovery and the development of life skills. With a full staff, LCDC will also be able to expand and formalize its PREA policies and procedures. (Total jobs reported: 2)
