Award Description: The Ascension Parish Sheriff?s Department is in the process of constructing a multi-purpose facility designed to serve as a storage site for all departmental emergency response vehicles, a logistical storage and distribution point for equipment and supplies during manmade and natural disasters, a Crisis Response Team (CRT) area to secure valuable equipment and vehicles involved in emergency response, an emergency operations center to be utilized as a command post by the Ascension Parish Sheriff?s Department and other emergency response agencies, and a training facility to house a five member training staff and two modern classrooms. The funding from the FY 2009 Recovery Act, Byrne JAG grant will be used to provide the most modern audio, video, and security technologies required to effectively operate and secure this vital facility. For years the Ascension Parish Sheriff?s Department Training Center has served as a foundation of training for several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies as well as provided a place for other public sector and not-for-profit organizations to conduct business, meetings and/or training. The addition of these technologies will help to ensure that the Ascension Parish Sheriff?s Office remains a leader in the law enforcement training community and is able to continue to provide our citizens and community with well trained law enforcement professionals. Through May 11 of this year (2009), 235 days of training, meetings and other functions have been held at the Ascension Parish Sheriff?s Department Training Center; an average of 1.79 usages a day. Often times we must turn down training request from other agencies due to an overburdened staff and lack of facilities. The addition of our new facility, combined with the installation of equipment purchased through this grant will allow us to maintain and expand on the training opportunities that we currently offer to law enforcement agencies throughout the southern United States. In addition to the training benefits brought through this project, these technologies will require the addition of a new employee within our Information Technologies Division. Though this employee will also have further responsibilities, they will spend a large portion of their time installing, maintaining and monitoring equipment purchased through this grant. Eventually, this project may also require the hiring of another maintenance/special services employee to maintain the facility and monitor a group of inmates assigned to clean and sustain the integrity of the facility. In addition, the installation of any equipment or any other funding methods of this project will not require National Environmental Policy Act clearance. The Ascension Parish Sheriff?s Department has a proud history of being a leader in law enforcement training and public service. The funding of this project will go a long way in ensuring and maintaining our ability to provide quality and substantial training to our law enforcement families and needed services to our community.
