Award Description: Community facility EZ/EC combination direct Loan/Grant
Project Description: Project Description: The proposed 8,500 SF building will replace the existing volunteer fire station and existing police station that are currently in separate locations. The existing VF station facility is an aging metal pre-fabricated bldg in need of major repair. There is poor access to the community served and there is no off-street parking available. Since Hurricane Dennis in 2005 the building has been uninhabitable. The police station is on the 2nd floor of a building that was flooded in 2005 during Hurrican Dennis. Mold is creating a health hazard. No handicapped accessibility or adequate parking is available. Relocating the fire and police stations will greatly benefit the citizens of the City of Apalachicola and surrounding areas. There is no other fire or police protection in the area. The new facilities will met current technology requirements and also place the functions of each department in a building that meets all Federal, State and Local code requirements to include wind load requirements. Emergency facilities such as these must remain functional during emergency situations, including flooding; which is a major threat in that this is a coastal community that is threatened by seasonal tropical strorms and hurricanes. Quarterly Activity: Proposed plans & specs have been reviewed and approved. Loan & Grant closing instructions will be ordered soon and when received project can go out to bid. After bid is awarded the pre-construction conference will be held and project will go under construction.
