Award Description: ARRA Strengthening Communities Fund Nonprofits Capacity Building Program The goal of this program is to build the capacity of our nonprofit partners in order to address the broad economic recovery issues present our community, including helping low-income individuals secure and retain employment, earn higher wages, obtain better-quality jobs, and gain greater access to state and Federal benefits and tax credits.
Project Description: The goal of this project is to provide training, financial assistance, and technical assistance to rural and reservation-based Native American nonprofit organizations and groups located in the Upper Plains, Southwest and Oklahoma. The focus of this project is to build the organizational capacity of these organizations and groups. SCF funds will be used to: ? Provide culturally appropriate training to 20 rural and reservation-based Native American organizations and groups annually in the areas of organizational development, program development, collaboration/community engagement, leadership development, and evaluation of effectiveness. This training will be provided through three regional two-day Institutes during each year of the grant. There will be no cost to the attendees for the Institutes. The format of these Institutes will bring together groups and organizations that will have issues and needs in common and allow them to develop supportive networks that may extend past the SCF grant period. ? Provide $240,000 in grants to 10 rural and reservation-based Native American organizations and groups annually for the purpose of capacity building in the areas listed above. The recipients will be Native American-controlled (Native-majority board) and will serve the targeted rural or reservation-base Native American communities. ? Provide individualized, tailored and culturally appropriate Technical Assistance (TA) to the rural and reservation-based Native American organizations and groups selected to receive the grants to address their priority capacity building needs in the areas listed above. To determine the priority needs, we will conduct a comprehensive effectiveness assessment for each of the organizations or groups selected to receive SCF-funded grants and TA.
