Award Description: The installation of a comprehensive fiber optic mesh infrastructure (TRF) will permit secured connectivity of Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) readers, positioned at all gate entry points, to a protected and central data communications system. Properly installed TWIC readers will permit the facility to accurately and efficiently process drivers, employees, contractors, and labor into the facility with a minimum impact to commerce. An underground fiber optic installation provides greater security and stability than the wireless systems presently in place at ITS. ITS will gain the ability and capacity for highly secured TWIC enforcement and access control such that it will advance and improve ITS? ability to perform effective control of perimeters without being compromised by wireless system failures or unauthorized network intrusion. Short haul wireless solutions will be depolyed only in circumstances where no fiber can be extended to certain areas of the facility. All current or future security projects contemplated by ITS will be benefitted by the presence of a fully meshed fiber optic cabling system (TRF). As necessary and applicable, ITS will cooperate with the Port of Long Beach to ensure that any infrastructure materials that may be required can be co-utilized for the mutual benefit of both parties including the use of fiber optic cabling systems, electrical sources and physical structures which have been installed by either ITS or the Port of Long Beach under provisions of previous security grants.

Project Description: None at this time

Jobs Summary: Jobs will be created for trenching, building of underground conduit systems, short haul wireless systems only where necessary, pre-fabrication of TWIC security post structures - including: guard booths, barricades, fences, asphalt work, and lighting. Fiber optic installation and associated hardware will create on-going jobs through the life of the project. Installation of TIWC reader structures for truckers and for pedestrians will create jobs for technicians as well as network/systems integrators. (Total jobs reported: 23)
