Award Description: Grant to State Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions
Project Description: GOAL I To implement employer-based victim service responses. First regional seminar presented, 38 employers attended. GOAL II To develop a plan for the creation and implementation of Individual Development Accounts and other asset building activities for victims of domestic violence. GOAL III To develop and implement policies addressing the public housing requirements of VAWA 2005 and, if passed by the Alabama Legislature, new private housing rights for tenants who are victims of domestic violence. Housing work group created. GOAL IV To, in cooperation with Legal Services of Alabama, address housing foreclosure issues facing victims of domestic violence. One meeting held with loan department of major state bank. GOAL V To expand access to the Earned Income Tax Credit among victims of domestic violence residing in Alabama shelters. Joined Alabama Assett Building Coalition, 2 meetings held. Received Allstate Grant for project. GOAL VI To provide training and technical assistance to member domestic violence agencies and their staff on employee assistance programs for domestic violence victims, housing rights and assistance for domestic violence victims, the availability of the Earned Income Tax Credit, and (if passed by the Alabama Legislature) the availability of unemployment compensation for victims forced to lose employment because of violence.
