To date, the Florida Department of Education has: (1) Issued an ARRA grant solicitation to SFAs participating in the NSLP; (2) Received and scored ARRA grant applications from SFAs competitively; (3) Awarded ARRA grants to SFAs participating in the NSLP; (4) Transferred funds to or reimbursed SFAs with ARRA funds the Florida Department of Education received.

Project Description: The Florida Department of Education received funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to assist in the purchase of equipment for School Food Authorities (SFAs) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) through a competitive grant process. Priority was given to SFAs for equipment for schools in which at least 50 percent of the students were eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Funding purposes included but were not limited to: increasing the number of students who benefit from the improvement of NSLPs, enhancing the quality of meal service, addressing gaps in existing State and local funding for equipment purchases, increasing the number of sites in which school meals are served, supplementing current operating budgets of School Food Authorities, and addressing issues related to geographic locations as related to frequency of food deliveries. A grant competition was held and funds awarded to eligible SFAs selected competitively. Through the sub-grants, Florida awarded funds for more than 300 pieces of assorted equipment. The majority of purchases were various types of ovens, freezers, refrigerators, customized serving lines, holding cabinets, dish washing machines, and steamers. In addition, we also awarded funds for a small number of exceptional items such as point of sale systems, refrigerated trucks, and delivery vehicles.
