Award Description: Pacific Islanders high school and college student summer research Internship in cancer and cancer-related health disparities. Overall purpose is to support 20 young Pacific Islanders to enter into health professions education and/or training programs to promote and contribute to cancer health disparities and cancer related research and health related science Project seeks to increase the number of Pacific Islander high school and college students who pursue research careers in health-related sciences, and aims to: 1) recruit 2 Pacific Islander high school students and 8 Pacific Islander college students to work on summer research projects; 2) place Pacific Islander students with community organizations and/or academic institutions to work on research projects focused on Pacific Islander cancer health disparities and cancer related research; 3) provide mentorship and academic support to Pacific Islander students to increase the number of students who pursue health careers on cancer health disparities and cancer related research and health related science.
Project Description: 9 Pacific Islander high school and college students are being recruited and provided with research experience through placement with community organizations and/or academic partners for the overall goal of increasing the number of Pacific Islander students and young adults entering the health workforce, cancer health disparities and cancer related research and health related science. At the end of the one month paid research internship positions, students are anticipated to increase their knowledge and training of cancer health disparities and cancer related research.
