Award Description: Entitlement award from the US Department of HUD for infrastructure improvements
Project Description: The proposed activity involves the reconstruction of streets and roadways in the low to moderate income eligible Park East Neighborhood, Census Tract 608.00 and Block Groups 1, 5, and 6, all of which exceed the 51% low to moderate income requirement according to the 2000 Census. The Park East Neighborhood is the primary location associated with the City?s Neighborhood Stabilization Program and has been hit particularly hard by foreclosures. The street reconstruction will ensure that the City?s strategy of improving this neighborhood continues as does its commitment to assisting those most impacted by the recession. The state of the current street system in this neighborhood requires rehabilitation and over the years it has begun to deteriorate. With this activity, the City will invest in its current transportation system by improving the streets in the most impacted neighborhood in the City. The activity directly minimizes reductions in essential services, as roads are essential to all communities. The construction industry in Florida has been especially hard hit by the recent economic downturn. This much needed road resurfacing project will stimulate jobs in the construction industry. The City anticipates that this activity will provide approximately 16 jobs involving labor, labor supervision and power equipment operation. It will also ensure that residents of the Park East Neighborhood are able to continue their current and future employment by relying on a more stable street system an essential service to all Plantation residents.
Jobs Summary: This activity will rely exclusively on construction labor. The City anticipates employing the following positions: one (1) Foreman, four (4) operators, four (4) truck drivers and eight (8) laborers. These positions are full time positions for the duration of construction during the completion of this activity. As mentioned previously, the construction industry in Florida has been especially hard hit by the recent economic downturn. Providing this project will not only assist residents of the targeted neighborhood, but will also assist the construction industry by providing the above referenced jobs for the contracted construction firm.
