Award Description: The project work is in the Central Region Geologic Hazards Team, Geologic Division, which is headquartered in Golden, Colorado. The Geologic Hazards Team (GHT) conducts research in geology, geophiysics, seismology, engineering seismology, geomagnetism, and geomechanics in order to assess seismic hazards, geiomagnetic hazards, and rish and groun-failure hazards on regional, national, and international scales. The nature of the work project work requires a Computational Geophysicist implementing processes to generate near-real-time data products, particularly rapid response ground shaking maps ('ShareMap'). The primary purpose of the work is the planning, development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of fail-safe, effective systems for the rapid portrayal of earthquake ground motions. The data and maps produced by the contractor are critical to effective emergency response following earthquakes in the United States. The data also provide the basis for numerous earthquake hazards evaluations and research studies currently underway in California. The contractor shall design and create computer software systems and develop new techniques and algorithms for ShakeMap data analysis. Software and documentation shall meet industry standards. The contractor shall interact with cooperating organizations, data consumers, the media and public to coordinate task goals and disseminate information about earthquake hazards in California and nationally. The contractor shall provide consultation and assistance to ShakeMap producers in each ANSS region following significant earthquakes. Additionally, the contractor shall serve as a consultant to other scientists both within on the development of computer analysis applications for generation of ShakeMap on a national scale. The contractor shall exercise control over ShakeMap development in several respects: Some ShakeMap development depends on bringing into direct application the most recent research and development on, for example, ground motion prediction equations. The contractor must be able to track relevant research and, under guidance of the Team leader, implement these advances into the ShakeMap software and operations. ShakeMap has been implemented in several regions of the U.S. and internationally. Each installation has region-specific requirements and developments. The contractor, in addition to responding to the development needs of the various regions, also must coordinate the development work that takes place within the regions, and incorporate their modifications into the ShakeMap software distribution. The mandate of the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN) requires the integration of the southern and northern California ShakeMaps, and the deployment of backup systems. The contractor must provide non-authoritative guidance over this process in order to achieve the goals of the project, while simultaneously satistying the needs of the participating organizations.
