Award Description: Identify and remediate priority health hazards in high risk target housing where environmental conditions may contribute to a child's illness or risk of injury; support public education and outreach that furthers the goal of protecting children and other vulnerable populations from environmentally induced illnesses; develop a professional workforce that is trained in healthy homes principles; evaluate the efficacy of healthy homes program activities and facilitate the dissimenation of findings, with a focus on evidence based, best practices; increase public awareness of housing related environmental health and safety hazards that threaten the health of children and other vulnerable populations; and further the principles of environmental justice and fair housing by increasing the availablity of safe, low-income housing.
Project Description: The grant is being used to identify and remediate priority health hazards in high risk target housing where environmental conditions may contribute to a child's illness or risk of injury; support public education and outreach that furthers the goal of protecting children and other vulnerable populations from environmentally induced illnesses; and develop a professional workforce that is trained in healthy homes principles. During this quarter, contracts were signed with three of the four subrecipients, the project coordinator was hired, two home assessments were started, and 11 interventions were completed in those homes. In addition, 301 community members received information on healthy homes and home hazards through community fairs and education workshops.
