Award Description: This application is a request for an administrative supplement to grant 2R25GM072643-05 'MUSC Minority Student Development Program' (PI, Cynthia Wright). Funding is requested to support two initiatives that will increase our ability to recruit underrepresented students to our graduate program: (1) support for short-term summer employment for talented undergraduate students and (2) support for an individual who can make needed updates to the information on our web site. Both of these ideas are well within the original scope of the IMSD program, the first specific aim of which is to increase the number and quality of minority student seeking a research career in the biomedical sciences. The first request is funding for summer employment opportunities to support three undergraduate students from institutions partnering with our Hollings Marine Laboratory to launch a new effor tin Oceans and Human Health. We have found over the years that a summer research experience has been instrumental in attracting students to apply to our graduate program. For the 2009 cycle, 11 applicants to our PhD or MD/PhD program were previous summer trainees. In 2006, 2008, and 2009 we matriculated minority PhD students who had previously been at MUSC as summer research trainees. In addition, we are requesting support for a web master to perform a much-needed update to our website, which is critical to recruiting talented underrepresented students to our program. Both of these requests will enhance employment opportunities in our state while advancing the goals of the College of Graduate Studies in research and training of students in the biomedical sciences.
