Award Description: The YouthBuild for Central Iowa project will provide disadvantaged youth, age 18 to 24, with the opportunity to achieve economic self-sufficiency by gaining their GED diploma, carpentry skills training and college credit while servicing their community through the building of permanent affordable housing for low-income families. The project will enroll 45 trainees in three, seven-month long training cycles. Of those who enroll, the project's goal is to graduate no less than 27 (60%).
Project Description: The Project Director was hired on August 17th and recruitment began immediately. After interviews, assessment, and orientation, 18 participants have been selected. Classes began on Sept. 21st with First Aid and CPR Training. Students were tested for the Career Readiness Certificate. A carpenter and instructor have been hired.
