Award Description: Modify Condenser Water Discharge Design Madigan Army Medical Center, Bldg. 9040, Ft. Lewis, WA Modify condenser water discharge from the central chiller plant and emergency generators tooling system such that the discharge can be sent to an alternate area such as the storm sewer in-lieu of running through the MAMC stream, pond and return gallery. Currently depending upon weather conditions, algae have become an issue with the pond, stream and most importantly the return gallery. The issue with algae is because of the water temperature (75?F) and the landscaping around the water feature. Algae has been determined to be the major cause of the on-going repairs to the condenser water return gallery because it has been clogging the path for the water to after to return to the aquifer. Other methods to remove the algae (use of fish, dredging, etc.) have proved to be ineffective to resolving the issue. The condition of the return gallery has reached the point where repairs will be required every 3 years. By installing the bypass, this will allow the stream to dry out and kill the algae. In addition this would also hold the water in the pond and allow for other treatment options. Finally by being able to divert the water from the return gallery, a more effective restoration of this area can be accomplished because work would not have to deal with the constant flow of water.
