Award Description: Design to Repair Sprinkler System US Army Medical Research & Material Command, Bldg. 42, Natick, MA. Bldg. 42 is approximately 40 yrs. Old, 3-story structure with fully developed basement and mechanical penthouse on the roof, 77,352 GSF. Ec. Floor consists of approx. 17,320 SF and the mechanical penthouse has 5.442 SF. The facility is used for offices, Research labs and environmental controlled chambers, health and research labs. Bldg is designated as Construction Type 2 B by IBC codes. The facility has inadequate fire suppression measures and lacks a complete fire sprinkler suppression system. This design will complement and complete the partial sprinkler installation in the current Wet Lab Repair Project and Basement Soldier Performance Lab Repair Project in the Bldg. The penthouse on the roof of Bldg. 42 will require design for sprinkler system to the total area of the bldg. for sprinkler system design ? 60,192 SF ? these are spaces that are not presently sprinkled, not covered under current renovation or future projects in the building. The work shall encompass space coverage classification in the form of Light Hazard occupancies for offices, laboratories, and egress corridors, Ordinary Hazards Group 1 occupancies for the laboratories, mechanical rooms and electrical room with transformers and switch gears, elevator machine room, elevator shafts and refrigeration service rooms or environmental chambers. The design shall also include Ordinary Hazard Group 2 occupancies for the medium hazard storage rooms, linen rooms, and boiler room at the mechanical roof penthouse. The sprinkler system shall be designed to reflect different smoke barrier & fire rating zones in the bldg. and the new sprinkler line or risers shall be connected to the newly installed wet standpipes in the egress stairwells and include interconnection between water flow switch and the existing fire alarm system in the building. The A/E shall provide design for Quick Response Sprinkler for the Environmental Control Chambers, Standard Response type for Generator rooms, Electrical rooms, Elevator shafts and machine room, and also Sidewall Sprinklers for the Elevator pit. Also to design the Sprinklers with the required cabinets and wrenches. The design shall be in accordance with UFC 3-600-01, NFPA 13, NFPA 101, the latest Factory Mutual Engineering Corporation and IBC requirements.
