Award Description: Expansion and enhancement of database support required for the Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC) to provide resources to the research community. Zebrafish is a premiere organism to study vertebrate development, physiology, behavior, genetics, and disease. Powerful techniques allow efficient generation and recovery of zebrafish mutations affecting genes that regulate developmental patterning, organogenesis, physiology, and behavior. Recent advances make it easy to study gene function in transgenic zebrafish and with antisense oligonucleotides. The functions of many, if not most, of these genes are conserved among vertebrate groups. Thus, analysis of zebrafish mutations provides insights into gene function in other vertebrates, including humans. The Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC) has been established as a repository that provides animals, materials, and services to the research community. ZIRC 1) provides a centralized repository for zebrafish genetic stocks and research materials, 2) provides consultation and pathology services, and 3) develops improved zebrafish husbandry methods. These materials, services, and information will be made widely available to the research community. These ARRA funds are being used to develop database support to track incoming fish lines and frozen sperm samples, the movement of fish and materials through the Resource Center, and the status of orders and shipments. The database will also be used to track all the activities of the pathology service and research in husbandry methods. The database and accompanying website will provide more and better information and a better means for the research community to obtain this information and communicate with ZIRC. Relevance: Zebrafish provide important models of human diseases. Researchers need ready access to animals, materials, and information for using zebrafish in biomedical research. A database and website will significantly enhance this access.
