Award Description: The Vanderbilt O’Brien Center was funded to establish the Vanderbilt Mouse Kidney Physiology and Disease Center (MKPDC). By bringing together nephrologists, pathologists, histologists, cell and molecular biologists together with experts in renal cell-specific transgenic technology, this Center provides an extended research base that enhances the efficiency of medical and biological research using mouse models of kidney disease. By developing and broadening the availability of sophisticated in vivo phenotyping, we aim to help investigators identify and study new mouse models and potential interventions and therapies that will lead to an improved understanding and treatment of these complex diseases and to develop new methodologies to study mouse models of kidney disease. One of the core missions of the MKPDC is to provide a unique service to the research community. To this end, the biomedical cores provide: 1) mouse kidney phenotyping resources to the local research community and to interested researchers at other institutions; 2) a range of mouse models of kidney disease that will be available for testing potential therapeutics; 3) routine and specialized histologic and morphometric analysis; and 4) archival mouse and kidney samples encompassing a wide range of developmental and pathophysiologic states, including specially prepared mouse kidney tissue arrays. A second major mission of the MKPDC is to develop and implement new methods for analysis of mouse kidney function, including the development of 1) state-of-the-art in vivo imaging techniques. A third major mission of the MKPDC is to provide an infrastructure and sufficient funds for pilot and feasibility grants to explore new technologies and new scientific avenues of investigation concerning kidney function and disease. This supplemental proposal requests funds for equipment necessary for the core service functions of the MKPDC, specifically for needed equipment for the Mouse Physiology and Pathophysiology Core and for the Histology and Morphometry Core. In addition, we are requesting additional funds for the Pilot and Feasibility Core. Due to budget constraints we were not able to fund all of the pilot projects that we had projected and currently, the Vanderbilt O’Brien Center is currently only funding two Pilot Projects at a reduced rate ($40,000 in total costs/per project/year). We are therefore requesting funds for two more Pilot and Feasibility Projects ($80,000 per project/per year) as well as additional funds for the two existing projects ($45,000 per project/peryear). The two additional projects will utilize the existing cores of the Vanderbilt O’Brien Center and are completely congruent with the overall aims and goals of our Center.
