Award Description: The City of Deerfield Beach has developed the following objectives as part of the city's proposed energy efficiency and conservation strategy in alignment with the EECBG program goals: ? Institute functional energy efficiency and conservation projects with measurable and verifiable results; ? Implement projects that promote energy efficiency and conservation to the general public through education and outreach by installing projects in high traffic public buildings and areas such as; City Hall, Public Works Facility, public parks and the beach; ? Prioritize potential projects which will maximize the city?s financial return in energy cost reduction and energy efficiency; ? Identify and implement projects which will result in the creation of US jobs and promote the utilization of products and materials created and manufactured in the United States of America and when possible in regional proximity to the City of Deerfield Beach. In relation to the EECBG the city proposes a strategy that will include the installation and retrofitting of products that promote conservation and energy efficiency in the form of water turbines, solar photovoltaic panels, SEER rated air conditions, and sea turtle friendly LED's. Within a years time each proposed goal will be measured through a comparison of past energy bills to those post energy efficiency projects as well as verified by qualified vendors who are selected through the competitive bid process to provide these services. In recent years the City has taken several steps to move towards a more sustainable community through the promoting of water savings and conservation, energy efficiency and recycling, reuse and waste reduction programs. The City of Deerfield Beach is also a signatory of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and has employees that are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals which help to steer the city in a more sustainable direction. Additionally, the City of Deerfield Beach has been regularly recognized as a leader in the recycling field and annually is among the top cities in Broward County, Florida for percentages of residents recycling and for total tonnage that is diverted from the landfill. Additionally, the city is in the process of developing a sustainability committee which has been defined as a goal within the Department of Public Works & Environmental Services. The committee would work with city departments, local businesses, residents and researchers from the local Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to identify ways in which we can work together to move towards a more sustainable city. It is anticipated that the committee would consist of city employees, local business representatives, residents and representatives of FAU. Water reduction and conservation strategies, energy reduction and conservation strategies, green house gas emission reduction activities, Green building and sustainable living, recycling, reuse and waste reduction programs, education and outreach, research, technology and program validation and development of a climate change and other sustainable action plan(s) are all anticipated goals of the committee.
