Award Description: I. Introduction to the MeTeOR (Meniscal Tear in Osteoarthritis Research) Trial and proposed aims of the administrative supplement The funded aims of the parent MeTeOR trial include: 1) To establish whether arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) provides greater pain relief and functional improvement in patients with symptomatic meniscal tear and OA over six months, as compared with nonoperative therapy. 2) To follow subjects for two years to ascertain whether short-term improvements are sustained. 3) To assess the cost-effectiveness of APM for patients with symptomatic meniscal tear and knee OA. This administrative supplement includes funds to accomplish five activities that will enable us to accelerate and improve the implementation of the original specific aims: 1. To fund an additional MeTeOR clinical center at Rush University. 2. To increase the effort of the research staff at our most productive external clinical site, Mayo Clinic, so that the Mayo site can increase its enrollment rate and continue its near-perfect follow-up rates. 3. To increase the effort of research staff at the most productive clinical site, Brigham and Women's Hospital, to permit greater enrollment, ensure excellent follow up and support the additional coordination and financial oversight involved in setting up a new center. 4. To increase the effort at the Data Coordinating Center in order to add an additional site to the web-based data collection/management systems, accommodate the need to train research staff at Rush and support valuable enhancements in the MeTeOR web site. 5. To hold an investigator's meeting in Spring 2010 to ensure standardization of protocols, discuss ongoing analyses in two areas critical to the original aims of the trial (the reliability and validity of the history of meniscal symptoms and the effect of departures from provider equipoise on selection bias and trial results) and to engage in strategic planning for further follow up of the MeTeOR trial participants.
Project Description: Outputs: 1. We anticipate adding the Rush University Center to MeTeOR and enrolling patients from Rush Progress: Rush began enrolling October 5, 2009 2. Maintaining brisk enrollment at Mayo and BWH Progress: BWH has one enrollee scheduled for this week and Mayo two 3. Training research coordinators at Rush and enhancing the MeTeOR website The Data Cooredinating Center is training personnel at Rush 4. Having an investigators meeting in spring 2010 We have arrived at two potential dates. Will finalize this month and begin agenda setting.
