Award Description: The goal of the parent grant (AG028657) is to define the pathophysiology of detrusor underactivity (DU), a condition present in two-thirds of frail incontinent elderly. Our studies are designed to implicate MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor) in the events by which urinary retention, lack of estrogen and aging promote DU. Using mif -/- mice and MIF inhibitors, we are testing the ability of interventions targeting MIF to prevent DU.

Project Description: This research project involves work on the following scientific aims: AIM 1. To establish capacity for in vivo urodynamic diagnosis of DU; AIM 2. To explore the use of double transgenic mice targeting GFPcherry to alpha-smooth muscle actin positive cells and GFPcyan to collagen, AIM 3. To exert a measurable impact on job creation.
