Award Description: Assistance to Firefighters Station construction Grants - The grant will provide funding for program eligible design and construction expenses under the Fire Station No. 50 and Fire Station No. 51 capital projects.
Project Description: The purpose of this construction award is to establish a permanent facility at one location and to contruct a new fire station. Both projects are currently under design, but awaiting direction from Grantor.
Infrastructure Description: The infrastructure investment in Fire Stations 50 & 51 will serve to address several purposes of the Recovery Act. The projects assist in preserving and/or creating jobs because approximately 260 individuals are expected to be employed throughout the duration of these projects. Secondly, in an effort to provide long term economic benefits the construction of two fire stations will protect citizens and infrastructure of newly developed and growing areas. The two fire stations will be established in response to annexation of the City of San Antonio as well as extremely high call volumes in rapidly flourishing areas. Finally, because the City of San Antonio expects a $67.5 million Fiscal Year 2010 General Fund shortfall, the two Fire Station projects were expected to experience a $3.7 million shortfall which will now be mitigated with the Assistance to Firefighters Grant recently awarded.
