Grant: $250,300 - Department of Energy - Aug. 14, 2009

Award Description: The Fairbanks North Star Borough will invest in an energy efficient retrofit program for old inefficient wood stoves. The average heating load of a home within the Fairbanks North Star Borough is 300,000 British thermal units (BTU) per year due to the 13,908 heating degree days per year experienced within this sub-arctic climate. The Fairbanks North Star Borough is also a non-attainment area per EPA PM2.5 regulations. A wood stove replacement incentive program would drastically cut particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) emissions and reduce the amount of wood needed to heat homes, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well. Reducing the amount of wood burned in each home would result in fuel saved to retrieve the wood, such as gasoline for pickup trucks, chain saws, and automatic wood splitters, and would reduce the carbon footprint of burning wood.
