Award Description: The Recovery Act funds received by Brookhaven National Laboratory will be used to optimize project execution and enhance research capabilities as well as to provide needed funding for high priority maintenance projects. The funds have been used for programs across platforms including: National Synchrotron Light Source II, General Plant Projects (roofing, mechanical/electrical upgrades and fire safety improvements), Environmental Management - including accelerated cleanup of nuclear facilities and contaminated area, Nuclear Physics PHENIX forward vertex and silicon vertex, construction of an interdisciplinary science building, enhanced utilization of isotope facilities, advanced technology R&D augmentation, Nanoscience research equipment, RHIC accelerator improvement project, Geothermal technologies, Light Source Improvements, Advanced research reviewer program, Enhanced utilization of isotope facilities, Long baseline neutrino experiment, Energy efficiency and renewable energy block grant, and the Nuclear science workforce program.
Project Description: National Light Source Synchrotron II - Construction well underway and notable milestones completed: Start of Pendant foundations 1 & 2, Mill material delivery - phase 5, engineered drawings for zones 5 & 6, reviewed and approved structural steel phase 7; Environmental Management - BGRR D&D Implementation plan finalized, FHWMF soil remediation complete; Interdisciplinary Science Building I - Start site preparation; General Plant Projects - Roof installations and electrical/mechanical upgrades begun; Nanoscience equipment Purchase- all specifications have been completed, reviewed and submitted to procurement organization; Enhanced Accelerator Improvement projects - design activities have commenced on stochastic cooling plane project; energy efficiency and renewable block grant program - 73 proposals have been received, reviewed and returned as part of the block grant program; Advanced research reviewer program (ARPA-E) - 12 proposal reviews have been completed; Enhanced Utilization of Isotope facilities - completed specifications for Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and has been released to Procurement; PHENIX Silicon Vertex MIE - Silicon sensor and registration equipment has been received; and for the Advanced technology R&D augmentation, Light Source Improvement projects, Nuclear science workforce program and the Geothermal technologies programs - the funding has been obligated and the various program milestone activities have commenced.
Jobs Summary: Of the 25 jobs created, 24 were in the Environmental Management area and include 2 management, 12.8 technical (project and system engineers, health and safety, field engineers, quality, etc.) jobs, 6.5 business (budget, project controls, finance, PPM support) and 3 administrative type positions. The other 1 FTE created at BSA as a result of the ARRA funding was a project engineer for the long baseline neutrino experiment. (Total jobs reported: 25)
