Award Description: The COPS Hiring Recover Program (CHRP) provides funding directly to law enforcement agencies to hire and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs, and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
Project Description: Funding via COPS CHRP program has enabled the Lawrence Police Department to retain seven (7) sworn officers scheduled to be laif off in July 2009. Through this funding we have been able to continue to send officers to each neighborhod meeting, continuing the line of communication that has been established between the community and the department. We were also able to continue our Junion Police Academy in July, where 70 of the City's youth attended. We were also able to maintain our community policing beats within targeted areas, and continued working with private agencies in developing safe neighborhoods. The LPD implemented its latest Community/Police partnership program called the Community Engagement Initiative. This program is designed to get residents better acquainted with members of the police department as they visit each neighborhood of the city. A notice is sent to residents via flyers and neighborhood groups advising when officers will be visiting a neighborhood, the location and time officers will be there. All residents are encourages to come by, or contact the department to meet with officers.
