Award Description: The NIDDK provides funding to four different basic science consortia. Each of these groups has established an informatics infrastructure, but has done so independently. This poses major limitations for the NIDDK since there is no direct way for visitors to the NIDDK website to search any of the subordinate sites for information, or for information to be easily exchanged between any of the NIDDK consortia. Thus, the overall goal of this project is to 1) establish an ongoing dialog between the informatics teams at each of the consortia, and 2) develop a plan for database interoperability and grid computing (data harmonization) within the NIDDK, and 3) begin implementation of this plan between two or more of the consortia. Aim 1. Establish regular teleconferences, coordinated by the BCBC Coordinating Center, of key NIDDK staff and informatics leaders within the BCBC, NURSA, MMPC and AMDCC consortia. Aim 2. Define specifications, methods and milestones for the goal of information exchange between NIDDK-funded consortia. Aim 3. Develop shared methods and tools to enable inter-database communication in an open and scalable fashion. Together, these aims will enable the NIDDK to better disseminate and exchange research information by having a set of standards and methodologies that will be reusable across NIDDK-supported resources.
