Award Description: The purpose of the Salmon Rearing Habitat Restoration & Protection Project at Lynwood Park & Related Habitat Improvements is to implement approximately ¼ mile of streambank restoration in addition to watershed and related riparian habitat improvements through the Youth Employment in Parks (YEP) program. The YEP program is coordinated by the Anchorage Park Foundation in partnership with the Anchorage Parks & Recreation Department and the Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) program of the National Wildlife Federation.

Project Description: During the current reporting period, the Youth Employment in Parks program hired 39 people to implement watershed restoration and protection projects in the Anchorage area. Crews completed a variety of trailbuilding, forestry and streambank restoration projects to improve the function of watersheds and protect and restore fish and wildlife habitat in the Anchorage area. A portion of the funding from this grant was awarded to the Municipality of Anchorage Parks & Recreation Department, which acts as the formal employer for the crews. The remainder will be used for restoration supplies, professional services and other program expenses. The majority of the project work was initiated in summer 2009 and will be completed in summer 2010.

Infrastructure Description: Not applicable

Jobs Summary: The 39 jobs created by this program represent seasonal crew leaders, senior crew members, crew members and support staff hired to implement conservation projects in Anchorage, Alaska. The majority of these positions were filled by youth between ages 15-19, meaning that this program offers employment and job training to a group that normally has limited access to employment. Youth employed in the project accurately represented the demographic distribution of the community. (Total jobs reported: 39)

Project Status: More than 50% Completed
