Award Description: The primary goal of this grant project is for the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) to provide more community policing projects and activities within Albemarle County. This will be accomplished through grant funded overtime (OT) projects and activities involving problem-solving, crime prevention, and safety enhancement through working directly with the citizens. The projects can originate from citizens' requests or complaints, or officers' awareness of a problem, or through a neighborhood initiative. Some of the funds will support Neighborhood Safety Projects which are multi-service neighborhood social and physical improvement projects. The deliverables, in addition to better community relations with the Police, will be relative to the project and reported by those in-charge of the project or activity. The units of measure will include: number of community initiatives planned; number of initiatives implemented; number of people directly effected per initiative; number of hours of programming provided per initiative; percent change in victimization calls for service for targeted area (if appropriate); and number of OT hours paid with 09 RA JAG funds. The secondary goal for the use of this grant is to fully implement the Taser program within the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office (ACSO). This will be accomplished through the purchase and issuance of new Tasers to 5 full-time Deputies. They have already been trained in their use. These new Tasers will be used as a less than lethal force option in dealing with combative and assaultive offenders, especially during the Deputy's court security assignments. The initial deliverable with be the purchase of the equipment followed by the on-duty Taser equipped Deputies as the major deliverable. The related measurements will be the funding spent on the equipment, and the type of equipment purchased.
