Award Description: Acquisition of X-26 Tasers with holsters to enhance the non-lethl weopan technology and capabilities of Law Enforcement in Nez Perce County Idaho.
Project Description: Project Abstract 2009-G8779-ID-DJ The purpose of this grant is for the acquisition of Electro-Muscular Disruption Devices also known as a Taser. These less lethal weapons provide law enforcement officers with another tool in their duty to apprehend offenders who are unwilling to submit to a lawful arrest. Offenders who resist the nonviolent efforts by law enforcement to take them into custody have chosen to escalate the use of force continuum to a higher level. Law enforcement has an obligation to arrest and can use a variety of different tools that they may have at their disposal. It is during these times when certain offenders confront or resist police officers that people have a tendency to get hurt. It may be the officer or offender or both. The use of a Taser is an excellent tool to resolve the incident in the most expedient and safe manner. The Lewiston Police Department has been using the Taser since 2002. The Nez Perce County currently has a limited number of Tasers?. They have 6 (six) M-26 Tasers and 6 (six) X-26 Tasers. The Taser units of that era (M-26) are wearing out and are expensive to repair. The new technology has made the X-26 Taser units smaller and less likely to be mistaken for an Officer?s duty weapon, a major safety improvement. The X-26 performs better and the battery life is far greater than the older version. This is one of the best tools for Law Enforcement that has come about in the last 25 years. The Taser has the ability to assist Officers in overcoming combative offenders while at the same time doing so in a safer and more efficient manner. The acquisition of these additional Electro-Muscular Disruption Devices will greatly enhance our ability to achieve that objective Quaterly Activities: Nothing to report
