Award Description: To implement AmeriCorps Programs in the District of Columbia.
Project Description: GOOD SAMARITAN FOUNDATION Developing the Pipeline for a Lifetime of Options and Opportunities (DPLOO) addresses unemployment by providing workforce development training and literacy enhancement to youth ages 14 - 24 residing in Ward 7 and Ward 8 of Washington, DC. Output: 70 participants will receive employment skills training and counseling facilitated by AmeriCorps members; Target: 70 youth will attend the workforce development training; Instruments: Workforce development benchmark summary. Out of School Youth Workforce Development (STEP UP) # Participants that passed construction/rehabilitation training courses; MOLD INSPECTION: 18; OSHA 30: 17; ASBESTOS AWARENESS: 17; LEAD AWARENESS: 17; CONFINED SPACE: 17; HANDS ON: 17; INDOOR AIR QUALITY:13; SOLAR POWER: 16 / Summer Program -15 youth completed resumes; 6 youth completed cover letters; 4 youth wrote personal statements; 9 youth composed self-recommendation letters; 5 youth gained skills and demonstrated knowledge in fundraising. LATIN AMERICAN YOUTH CENTER The purpose of this grant is sustaing the AmeriCorps program at the Latin American Youth Center during the recent economic downturn. It will be utilized as a match waiver and will supplement the existing awarded AmeriCorps slots and will prevent reduction of the current slots due to lack of match funds. The positions retained by this funding enable us to continue serving over 250 students in health education, over 60 students in in-school tutoring, and over 150 students in after-school programs. Members funded through this grant since May 2009 have already assisted in designing and operating two summer camps, one serving 1st through 4th grade students with themes around cultural diversity and one serving 5th through 8th grade students with themes of experiential learning and educational field trips. These retained slots have also contribute to start-up of after-school and in-school education tutoring for the 2009-2010 school year!
