Award Description: ARRA provided funding for Home-Delivered Nutrition Services. Established in 1978 under the Older Americans Act, the program provides meals to seniors who are homebound.
Project Description: ARRA funding for Home-Delivered Nutrition Services will augment existing resources, replace revenue lost from local sources due to the economic downturn, and support the continued delivery of meals to vulnerable older Americans. Home-delivered meals help seniors to maintain their health and avoid hospitalization and nursing home placement.
Jobs Summary: There were a total of 3.22 FTE jobs created as a result of the ARRA Home Delivered Meals funding. The jobs are essential to the delivery of services of Home Delivered Meals throughout NJ. Some examples of jobs created or retained as a result of the ARRA HDM funding are: Kitchen aides and drivers. Without the additional ARRA funding in HDM, the people working in these jobs would not have been hired or were in danger of being eliminated. The ARRA funding made it possible for them to gain or retain employment. The additional funding allowed for many individuals who were previously on wait lists to now be served and contributed to the supports that have kept many older New Jersey residents in their homes rather than institutions. The creation of new jobs has made it possible for new routes where there were no routes previously. This has been important to those local communities where there was a gap in services.The ARRA funding made it possible for several individuals to gain or retain employment, thereby impacting the local economy in the communities that they serve.
