Award Description: The Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced, for the fiscal year of 2010-11, the opportunity for grantees to seek administrative supplemental funding for cancer health disparities (CHD) planning grants, to create state-of-the art regional networks/centers dedicated to CHD research, training and community interventions through a Geographic Management Program (GMaP). On behalf of GMaP Region 1, and the Region 1 PIs of the NCI CRCHD’s Minority Institutions/Cancer Center Partnership (MI/CCP), the Community Networks Program (CNP), and the Patient Navigation Research Program (PNRP), the GW Cancer Institute received a 2 year Administrative supplement that is attached to the GW Cancer Institute’s DC Citywide Patient Navigation Research Program Grant (Patierno NCI U01 CA116937-04) with Steven Patierno (Executive Director, GW Cancer Institute) as PI.

Project Description: The GWCI and GMaP Region 1 are fully engaged in research, training, community intervention, and information dissemination addressing the disparities in cancer risk, screening, treatments and outcomes for ethnic and racial minorities. Thus, Region 1 understands and appreciates the need to enhance our infrastructure and increased our inter-institutional coordination in order to better address cancer disparities and the local, regional and national challenge of the unequal burden of cancer on minorities and vulnerable populations. This Administrative supplement will facilitate planning for a future multi- and trans-disciplinary 'Center-level GMaP grant application, expected in 2011 or 2012. Our planning process will be directed toward the following goals of a Region 1 GMaP: The overarching goal is to build a region-based 'hub for the support and efficient management of cancer health disparities research, training, community intervention and information dissemination, and develop an infrastructure that can help each of the NCI-funded MI/CCP, CNP, PNRP, and CURE programs work together, in conjunction with the Region 1 BMaP, to develop stronger cancer and cancer health disparities research and training programs. These efforts will eventually include developing better integrated regional research and training Core programs, conducting joint regional workshops to facilitate communication and dissemination, implementing region-wide community interventions, and developing planning and decision-making processes for sustainability of CHD efforts. The planning process for a GMaP will be conducted in 3 Phases. The specific aims are: Phase 1: Complete development of a working partnership and agreements, with planning for required four Core Services and additional elective opportunities; Phase 2: Complete a needs assessment of the partners and the region including current strengths, capabilities, needs and interest; Phase 3: Complete development of a GMaP implementation plan.
