Award Description: ARRA Summer Research Experience: Student

Project Description: There are approximately 250 neurological ? brain and nervous system ? disorders. Combined, neurologic disorders are the leading cause of death, disability and loss of quality of life worldwide according to the World Health Organization. Unfortunately there are few therapies for individuals who suffer from neurologic disease. To address the problem of brain and nervous system disorders we have focused on identifying cell survival strategies with the goal of finding new treatment options. We have identified a protein of unknown function that is potently neuroprotective that we have named Iduna, for the Norse goddess of immortality and healing. We are exploring the biologic function of Iduna and the interaction with the death promoting molecule, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase. The summer research project was focused on understanding the death promoting molecule, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase. The student learned new skills and technologies. The project was completed.
