Award Description: The Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence is using Recovery Act funds to support our project 'Recovery Act Economic Stimulus in Mississippi Domestic Violence Services.' These funds will help the Coalition more effectively address the State's critical domestic violence issues as we begin our third decade of service in 2010. Funding is supporting (1) the new position of Public Awareness Coordinator and (2) training and technical assistance to 12 member shelter programs throughout the state to help them strengthen their capacity to serve victims of domestic violence.
Project Description: After receiving award notification in June 2008, the Coalition began recruiting for the new position of Public Awareness Coordinator. Interviews took place during the Summer and a candidate was hired in September with a start date of October 1, 2009. The overall purpose of the grant award was to support the creation of this new position and to provide technical assistance and training to the agency's 12 member shelters throughout the state. Regional trainings to be held in the winter, spring, and summer of 2010 are presently being planned and organized. These trainings will also contribute to stimulation of the local economy in each area by making use of hotels as sites of trainings and utilizing other amenities in the area during the training dates.
Infrastructure Description: The grant award to the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence fulfills the purpose of creating jobs and promoting economic recovery through the creation of the new position of Public Awareness Coordinator and by providing a means to stimulate the economy in local communities in the state that will serve as sites for the special regional trainings for member domestic violence shelters. These trainings will utilize hotels as training sites and will encourage participant patronage of other area businesses during the dates of the trainings in 2010.
Jobs Summary: The new position of Public Awareness Coordinator will manage the Coalition's internal and external communications, public awareness efforts, and will coordinate the Domestic Violence Shelter Programs Training Institute for member shelters statewide. Recovery Act funds allowed for the creation of one full-time position at the agency and will help stimulate the economy in regions where trainings are held by making use of hotels as sites of trainings.
