Award Description: The proposed supplement is consistent with the NIMH priority area of 'Retaining post-doctoral fellows and early stage investigators in the field of mental health research. Funds from this administrative supplement will be used to create a full-time post-doctoral fellowship position to provide support to Dr. West in carrying out the aims of her K23 research study. By providing funding for this position, the proposed supplement will meet the objective of retention by: (1) increasing the resources available to Dr. West to support the timely progression, efficiency, and successful completion of her K23 study; (2) improving the quality of her study by creating a doctoral-level position for an identified candidate already sophisticated in the specific treatment, models, and methods relevant to the completion of this study; and (3) accelerate the pace of the study so that Dr. West has increased time towards the end of the award period for publication and R01 grant writing, both imperative to her career progression. Increased capacity in these three areas will enhance the efficiency, quality and pace of Dr. West’s study and thus, promote her success as an independent researcher and ensure her retention in the field of clinical research for pediatric mood disorders. The creation of a post-doctoral fellowship will also provide Dr. West with the opportunity to mentor a more junior colleague, providing Dr. West with practice in training and mentoring important to her own professional development, while at the same time fostering the development of a post-doctoral fellow into a junior faculty candidate, potentially even in our own program. By achieving the objectives outlined above, the proposed supplement meets the NIMH priority in this area by promoting Dr. West’s retention in the field, while also being consistent with the larger objectives of the NIH Recovery Act for Supplements, which include both accelerating the tempo of the planned research and creating job opportunities.
Project Description: The proposed administrative supplement, which involves the creation of a two-year post-doctoral fellowship, is encompassed by the parent grant 'Psychosocial Treatment for Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (PI: Amy E. West, Ph.D.; K23 MH079935). The proposed supplement is consistent with the NIMH priority area of 'Retaining post-doctoral fellows and early stage investigators in the field of mental health research. Funds from an administrative supplement will be used to create a full-time post-doctoral fellowship position to provide support to Dr. West in carrying out the aims of her K23 research study. As of this date, the post-doctoral fellow has been hired; however no funds from the ARRA supplement have been used yet as they were just received. The post-doctoral fellow will be funded by the ARRa funds effective immediately.
