Award Description: Virginia Department of Environmental Quality was awarded a State Clean Diesel Grant to fund the following five diesel emission reduction projects. (1) Diesel retrofit/replacement for up to 155 drayage trucks; (2) State-wide biodiesel buy-down program; (3) Replacement of five Gloucester County school buses with propane fuel buses; (4) York County engine (backhoe) replacement; and (5) Installation of idle reduction technologies on approximately 10 school buses. The general purpose of the grant is to reduce diesel emissions and improve air quality.
Project Description: The following activities occurred during this quarter. (1) Diesel retrofit/replacement for up to 155 drayage trucks project: Signed rebate agreements with two companies to retrofit total of 48 trucks. (2) State-wide biodiesel buy-down program: Established upper and lower limits of incremental cost per gallon of buy-down and collected pricing and potential biodiesel volume use information. (3) Replacement of five Gloucester County school buses with propane fuel buses project: Gloucester County received four propane buses, installed 800 gallon propane tank and dispensing unit, and county personnel attended specialized maintenance training. (4) York County engine (backhoe) replacement project: York County is looking in to replacement of a 1978 backhoe. (5) Installation of idle reduction technologies on approximately 10 school buses project: Completed initial data collection. Evaluating cost of equipment to track idling time.
