Award Description: The intended purpose of this program is to comply with the stated purposes of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This program's primary goal is to preserve and create jobs, to promote economic recovery, and to assist those law enforcement agencies most impacted by the recession. This programs secondary goal is to stabilize state and local government budgets, in order to minimize and avoid reductions in essential services and counterproductive state and local tax increases. ADECA/ LETS as the SAA for this program places great emphasis on accountability and transparency in the use of grant funds. The Edward Byrne JAG Program is the primary provider of Drug and Violent Crime Task Forces in Alabama and is a principal provider for our local jurisdictions. JAG funds support numerous components of our criminal justice system and has improved greatly our effectiveness and efficiency.
Project Description: ADECA / LETS has awarded over $6.5M to the Department of Corrections, over $9M to continue funding thirty Drug and Violent Crime Task Forces around the State. These funds were awarded based on population of the area served and statistical data reported by the task force. We have also made available the Byrne JAG Less Than $10K list for qualifying agency to make application. We expect to see larger numbers of the grant awards less than $10K as the grant progresses.
