Award Description: Forsyth County, GA is using the 2009 Recovery Act Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) local funds to enhance the operations of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. The Recovery Act JAG Funds will be used to purchase and install an electronic inmate tracking system which will assist in providing protection to court employess. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office will also use the funds to purchase an automated victim notification system that will enhance the ability of the detention officers to complete various tasks and inform victims about pertinent information in a timely manner. In addition, the JAG funds will be used to refurbish and repair equipment from the Cyber Crime Unit, enabling the unit to remain operational and be more efficient.
Project Description: The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office use of the grant funds will accomplish two different objectives of the JAG grant which are to improve and/or enhance crime victim and witness programs and improve technology for the prosecution of crimes and the protection of the public. The electronic inmate tracking software will eliminate the need to print documents that relate to the locating of inmates and improve the tracking of inmates within the Forsyth County system. The automated victim notification system will automatically contact victims by phone when an inmate is released or escapes, thus increasing the protection and safety of the victims and the community. Remaining funds will be used for the purchase of forensic and crime scene technology equipment which is used by the Cyber Crime Unit. By using grant funds to repair and replace needed equipment the sheriff's office can keep the detective working in the unit, thus preserving jobs.
